Château Thénac – 1621

Wine has been made on the site of Château Thénac for over 900 years – first by Benedictine monks and then, after their priory was demolished, winemaking recommenced in 1621.

Now, on the 400th anniversary of that date, the Château has decided to celebrate this rich history by releasing a special cuvée.

Called 1621 and only available in magnum format, this unique wine is made from just two plots - one Merlot and one Cabernet Sauvignon – both on the plateau surrounding the Château.

The grapes are picked by hand and lovingly crafted in the state-of-the-art cellars into a rich, complex, yet impeccably balanced wine.

The 1621 Magnums can be pre-ordered now from the Château by emailing wines@chateau-thenac.com.

In further celebration of 400 years of history, the Château has partnered with an outstanding young artist to create the label for this limited-edition magnum. Kathrine Maple, whose style and vision perfectly reflect those of the Château, was the first prize winner of the 2020 John Moores Painting Prize as well the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition (2014 and 2016). Her work has been exhibited with Aleph Contemporary in The Just - a virtual group exhibition curated by Dan Coombs (2020), Glynebourne Summer Festival (2020), Marmite Painting Prize, Summer Show Wiltshire, Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (2019), Beers Gallery, Jerwood Drawing Prize, Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize, Royal Drawing School The Best of The Drawing Year 2012-13, and in Betweenlands - hosted by Blaine Southern in 2014.

Kathryn Maple (b. 1989) studied Printmaking at Brighton University and undertook a six-month residency at The Muse Gallery on Portobello Road before completing The Drawing Year at The Royal Drawing School in 2013. Her practice is based on landscapes that are reconstructed into paintings. Ideas for paintings come from memory, drawings and photographs. Kathryn's paintings often come together like a collage - with the subject emerging from filtered shapes and bursts of colour. Kathryn currently lives and works in London.

Kathrine’s commission for Château Thénac embraces her love for landscapes and her elegant use of colour, complementing the colours of the wine.

The marriage of fine art and fine wine can be traced back through the depths of time, as can the history of our much-loved Château. This special release is from the 2019 vintage and is limited to 900 magnums, each carrying the label designed by Kathryn and a wine that celebrates this unique place and our rich history.
